چکیده

1. This paper describes the effects of differences in food quantity and quality on selected life history traits of Ceriodaphnia pulchella. Animals were fed with four concentrations of two green algae, Scenedesmus obliquus and Chlamydomonas globosa, given separately as well as in a 1 : 1 mixture. 2. In most cases growth, reproduction and condition of the animals and consequently the rate of population increase, r, increased with food concentration. Life history parameters of animals raised on S. obliquus were lowest, whereas no significant differences were found between animals fed with C. globosa and with the mixture of the two algal species. 3. In contrast to the large effects of food quantity and quality found in the laboratory, an analysis of the population dynamics of C. pulchella in Lake Tjeukemeer showed that the effect of changes in food conditions during the growing season of this species was limited, although overall food levels seemed to be poor throughout the year. 4. Changes in the birth rate of the population are mainly governed by changes in temperature, and possibly by changes in the densities of the invertebrate predator Leptodora kindtii.

Effects of range-wide variation in climate and isolation on floral traits and reproductive output of Clarkia pulchella.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Plant mating systems and geographic range limits are conceptually linked by shared underlying drivers, including landscape-level heterogeneity in climate and in species' abundance. Studies of how geography and climate interact to affect plant traits that influence mating system and population dynamics can lend insight to ecological and evolutionary processes shaping ranges....

Species- and Age-Specific Differences in Bacterial Resource Utilization by Two Co-Occurring Cladocerans

The trophic interaction between zooplankton and bacteria was examined to determine how this food web linkage varied with resource abundance and consumer species and age. Life table experiments and feeding-rate measurements were conducted with two species of co-occurring cladocerans, Daphnia parvula and Ceriodaphnia lacustris. Cohorts of these cladocerans were followed from birth to death and fe...

Geographic variation in thermal plasticity of life history and wing pattern in Bicyclus anynana

Temperature is one of the main environmental cues regulating seasonal plasticity in insects. Global climate change may lead to a change in the predictive value of temperature for seasonal conditions, potentially resulting in a mismatch of phenotypic form and environment. The afrotropical butterfly Bicyclus anynana shows striking seasonal plasticity for wing patterns and life history traits. Thi...

Seasonal changes in icefish diel feeding patterns in Lake Chaohu, a large shallow eutrophic lake of China

Seasonal changes in the diel feeding patterns of the zooplanktivorous icefish (Neosalanx taihuensis), which is an endemic species of China, were studied in the large, shallow eutrophic Lake Chaohu of China during the autumn of 2002 and summer of 2003. The results of the diel feeding rhythm indicate that icefish is a visual particulate feeder. There were large differences in diet composition and...
